A Poem for Earth Day

~ I was sad one day and went for a walk; I sat in a field.
A rabbit noticed my condition and came near.
It often does not take more than that to help at times-to just be close to creatures who are so full of knowing, so full of love
that they don't chat.
They just gaze with their marvelous understanding~ St. John of the Cross

Loka Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu- May all beings be happy and free, and may my actions contribute to this.

May you do something to honour the earth today. Notice that the wisdom and beauty you'll find, can also be discovered in your self.

HAPPY EARTH DAY EVERYONE!

Playlist for Thurs April 14th

A good little blast of tunes, for an hour power. Starts with an electronic/Indian morph, moves into feel good electronic beats, slows down to loose reggae, right down to acoustic, and ends with a classic 70's folk tune. Don't ask me how I made it flow but it actually worked! Enjoy

Epic -
Karsh Kale
Finally Moving -Pretty Lights
Separator- Radiohead
Switch Up- Pretty Lights
Finley Quay
This World- Zero 7
The Nest - Jose Gonzalez
Which Will- Nick Drake

P.S. Radiohead's new album, "King of Limbs" is so magical. It's a great Alice in Wonderland like adventure. The beats are perfect for an upbeat class, and the 6th and 7th songs are savasana gems. One student said that "Codex" (the 6th) made her feel like she was swimming. "Lotus Flower" fits Surya Namaskar's constant flow and carefree nature. I made a joke that the song also went well with making love;) And later discovered that often the pulsation of Sun Salutation resembles the same rhythm as sex. No? Yes? Anyone with me on that one? Think about it next time !!!

Bloggers Block

I love to write. You'd think that blogging would be the perfect way to re-visit my favourite subject in school, however this site has left me with a sore jaw. I've been resisting this page, gripping every time I'd visit it. I suppose it's because I'm not quite sure of the rules. But that's just it...blogging is supposed to be very hippie, and liberating. Spelling doesn't even count, the shorter the sentences the better, sloppy fingers&29.... , nobody is marking this shit.. can you swear? Arg.. rules, back to the rules. Type A man, type A.
I guess I'm finding blogging like journaling, and that's comforting for me. On the other hand, it's not like writing in your diary at all. People are reading, and my inner critique comes out. My scenario gets even more complicated, as I've included a blog on my yoga site, my professional, "work related" site. So should I keep my posts limited to insights, knowledge, and quotes only directed towards yoga? But then I feel my 6th chakra gripping up at the thought of this limitation. Will letting it all hang out ever put a future job on the line? To be silenced, but allow others to feel comfortable, or do I rip off my pencil skirt, and loosen the tight bun, to risk loosing a few?
I remember yoga teacher, Sadie Nardini, saying, "Hell yes, I want to work barefoot". This is my work, and I'm grateful. I can hit the pavement, join the daily grind, but do it without covering the soles of my feet. I get paid to maintain authentic connections! The more I discover who I am honestly, the better guide I will be for others, and the work will take care of itself.
So as of today, I've made a promise that no matter who I'm directing to this site, it will make no difference on what I write. Anything I'm moved to share, I will post. For part of my job is to always remember Satya (truth), to remember to inspire, and to remind others, and myself, to never sensor your light. Especially from those ones you fear blinding the most!
This blog is for me, but this blog is for you. What's the difference anyhow?
Consider my blogging block unclogged!

2012: How Accurate are the Mayans?

I'm seeing all of these natural disasters and can't help but think it's a lead up to 2012. But then I hear my boyfriend's voice in my head saying, "Emily, it's normal! We've had the appropriate number of disasters this year."
Then I go to class and hear my crazy, hippie teachers say that we need to prepare for a big shift. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Somebody tell me, before I manifest 2012 through my own fearful worry.
Today I felt a sliver of peace. I watched a video shared by my inspirational friend, Jodi. It was a conversation that finally resonated with me, and by my constant "mmmms" and head nodding, I could tell I digged it,. The speaker left me feeling carefree about the whole situation, because frankly, I'm scared. I have a great fear that the whole world will die together. Can you imagine the chaos, can you imagine the airports, can you imagine CNN? Damn, they'd just love this piece of drama to dramatize. But I'm scared for the waiting. When will this happen, how will this happen, who will I be with, will I be able to get with my family, where would we go to prep for death? I know so morbid.
However in the video today, the speaker brought to me that sliver. She was a tad bit on the mystical side, but still. She believes the Mayans are right. Not that the world will end, but there will be an energetic shift. She expressed the new age of Aquarius is upon us, and that we should be excited. I'm not entirely educated with the meaning of this age, but regardless, it will bring goodness.
Even if 2012 doesn't happen, we can't afford not to change, and the Mayans predict we will. This evolution includes coming together with our neighbours, as we will need each other to maintain strength. To live from the heart chakra, and to do everything with love behind it. To depend less on progressing technologically, but to move forward with the human connection. I can resonate with this, as I'm sure you can as well.
She also shared that when/if there is a shift, there will be a moment of darkness for days. However the ones who stay bright, the ones who encourage others to stay bright, will survive to see the sun shining again. At this stage in the video, there were beautiful pictures of our earth. I couldn't get over the colour and vibrancy of what is believed to be unravelled. And there was no talk of death, only survival to rebirth.
I'd like to think that we'll re-learn how to connect deeply with each other, as humans, and also to this earth. To no longer abuse it's beauty for our own selfish beauty. To begin to accept the power of our intuition, to feel energies, and to openly express all that we feel and sense, without judgement. See this would be a lovely shift and end to our current world, which resides only in the 3rd chakra. But you can feel it vibrating up to the 4th, the heart, and it feels nice.
Really, who knows what will happen in good ol' 2012. Even if you're a saint, guru, mystic, scientist, or geologist, we'll never know until the year becomes our present. Maybe the Mayans won't be accurate, but the message which I received from the video was, can we live with that urgency for change? We might think that if we don't evolve to conscious, loving, sensitive beings, a gigantic wave will tower over the whole world. Does it always take fear to force a shift? Hope not. How about, "life is good" ? With that in mind, even if the sky falls on our heads, we'll die with a smile on our faces, and love in our souls. And even if 2012 is just another normal year, can it be filled with the benefits of the shift we made in preparation for THE END? I'll take a little fear, a little rising from the ashes, if its means those beautiful images I saw in the video will manifest.
Life is good, but maybe the Mayans knew we could make it better:)

New Yoga Pics

Anyone need pictures for websites, headshots, posters, whatever?
Ellie Ericson is your gal!
We took a lazy, rainy afternoon to try and capture the essence of yoga. Pretty hard, but thanks to Ellie we came close:)
Seriously though, Ellie was professional but fun, technical but crazy creative, with a clear eye and bendy body to get the perfect angle.
Check out her site at www.ellieericson.com.
Here a few more from our shoot.
Enjoy xo

New classes for the New Year

I'm very excited to announce that Yoga At My Place, will be starting up again Jan 5th, 2011.
Every Wed please join me for a sweat, cleanse, and a good breathe, in my loft abode, from 7-8:20pm. Cost is $10, and please bring a mat.
Email me if you're interested and I'll give you the rest of the details.
All I can say is magical things happen here. I don't know what it is, the people, the view, the asana... things just happen.
Hope to see you:)

Also beginning in the New Year, I'll be teaching at Yoga for the People. This studio is one of the most breathtaking spaces in Vancouver, AND it's all by donation (suggested $10).
My first real "home studio" was a donation based space in Santa Monica, CA. The Kula (community) basically ran the place. We held it's walls up, with what we offered every class. It allowed you to feel more involved, and it made it more intimate. And because of this, there was a deeper understanding between the students. Yoga for the People holds this same family feel.
I really encourage you to check it out.

I'll be teaching a Hatha Flow class there Mondays at 4pm.
So come support the studio, your teachers and yourself!

It's been SOOOOO Long!

Hey All,
Wow I haven't blogged in so long. Thats what summer does to you I guess. Mmmmm what's new. * Enjoyed two weeks at my family cabin, in Ontario! It's actually a "cottage", but I gotta translate for the BCers!
* Ray LaMontagne has a new CD out. It's very mellow, but is perfect to play after a hard days work. Light some candles, cook a fragrant supper, put on your comfy cozies and play this album.
* Check out my new sched for the fall. I'm subbing in between, so if you're interested in those times email me.
* So many ppl around me are pregnant. What is with that?
* My older sister got engaged. She's the first one to go out of the 4 kids. We're growing up. We shed some tears :(
* FINALLY GOT INTO FULL LOTUS. This is huge for me, as I'm the "tight hip girl" and I LOVED hanging onto my "bad knee story". Guess that has been shed. My body is changing. Thank you yoga. I love you...
* Still loving my camera, so let me know if you want to do a photo shoot cheap!

That's it for now.
Just like as the kids are buckling down for school and a schedule, I'm doing the same with my blogging. Although fall equals a lot of yummy things, it does mean back to work.

Till next time,
Namaste, and see you on the mat!
